Many Islands

The Mediterranean Sea has many islands that anyone can visit on their holiday. Italy offers the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Cyprus is an island off the south of Turkey and west of Syria. This island is the third largest in the Mediterranean and a very popular tourist destinations. France offer Corsica and Greece has Crete and Euboea which is second largest in population to Crete.
Euboea is shaped like a seahorse and is about ninety-three miles long. Greece also has Lesbos, Rhodes, Chios, Kefalonia and Corfu. The principal town is also called Corfu and has a population of about twenty-eight thousand people. The name Corfu comes from Greek mythology and is related to a few powerful water symbols: Asopos, a Greek mainland river and Poseidon, the god of the sea.
Spain has their islands also: Majorca, Ibiza and Minorca being the main islands in this chain. It is possible to book 5 star holidays on any one of these island which are all different and offer their own character. Majorca is the largest of this chain called the Balearic Islands. During the Spanish Civil Way, the island of Majorca or Mallorca, was subjected to an amphibious landing back in August of 1936. The goal was to drive the nationalists from Majorca so the Republic could reclaim the island. The series of events that took place at this time are known as the Battle of Majorca.
Today the island are frequented by not only tourist but by celebrities. Ibiza is the party island and Minorca is known for its traditional summer fiestas. Each year in Ciutadella there is the Festes de Saint Joan that lasts for three days. The first day has a man with well groomed sheep who parades the local streets. The second day there are black horses as part of the show. These horses are dressed with ribbons and rosettes. These horse will rear up so that the brave souls can run underneath them. The third day offers a competition between riders in a harmless jousting show. This festival ends with fireworks as it comes to a close.
