What to Do and See in Big Sur

Big Sur is a vast, sparsely populated area along about ninety miles of the central Californian coastline, and it is a rugged, wildlife wonderland. The region used to be inaccessible to most visitors, but now, on Highway 1 offers a scenic road trip with stop off points where travelers can get out of their cars and appreciate the view. Photography opportunities are endless. The Big Sur offers some of the most exquisite natural vistas on Highway 1, but the area also offers wildlife and especially bird watching, hiking, camping, mountain climbing and fun in the sun at the beaches.
There is one Federal, the Ventana Wilderness in Big Sur, and nine state parks such as Carmel River State Park, Point Sur Lightstation State Historic Park, and Julia Pfeifer Burns State Park. Now Carmel River State Park and Beach encompasses a fabulous mile of beach. This spot is very popular for scuba diving and watching migratory birds. The Point Sur Lightstation State Historic Park is famous for its lightstation built at the turn of the century. Visitors can take tours of this historical landmark. The Julia Pfeifer Burns State Park has a fantastic waterfall that cascades down a cliff side into the ocean below.
Big Sur has long attracted Artists and writers, and the area is full of history dating back to the ancient native nomadic tribes, but today worldwide nature lovers enjoy this wilderness treasure. People can come and plan relaxing vacations here in the great outdoors. There are campgrounds, lodges, cabins and 5-star resorts. The beaches are spectacular. Swimming is not safe at many beaches, but people can scuba dive, go kayaking, and engage in many beach activities.
